Master Degree After A Gap Year
A graduate master’s degree is a master’s degree that does not lead directly to doctoral studies. This is different from a “master’s degree” taken as part of a doctorate. A master’s degree in psychology usually requires a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field (social work, counseling, biology) or advanced training in these fields. Most graduate programs require the general and/or psychology GRE.
How Will Taking A Gap Year Affect College Scholarships?
Master’s programs in psychology are not currently accepted, but may be in the future. Programs can be MA or MS, and it is better to have different majors (ie, other degrees are health psychology vs. psychological psychology, biological psychology/biopsychology, experimental psychology, even general psychology).
Look for programs that are affiliated with public or private universities/colleges and have small groups (20 or less). For-profit programs that enroll large numbers of students (more than 20 per year) are not ideal, as you may receive less counseling and support.
When choosing a graduate program, consider not only the type of degree, but also the courses offered. Are there cognitive psychology courses? Human psychology? Developmental psychology? Strange psychology? Statistics and research methods?
You can also check the courses involved. Do you need a dissertation? Is this dissertation a literature review, software development, or original research? The latter is preferred because it will help you to be more competitive in applying for doctoral programs.
The Benefits Of Taking A Gap Year Before Graduate School
Participating in a clinical program, such as a Masters in Clinical Counseling program, is preferred, but not required.
In or after the last semester of your master’s program, you will enroll in doctoral programs. Remember that some courses or research may need to be repeated. Keep all your syllables and notes; you can submit them for consideration for credit in your doctoral program.
Previous experience is often important in clinical psychology programs, because gaining experience as a paid researcher is a great way to spend your years. Possible positions include research assistant, research director, or laboratory manager.
