Students interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy can begin their journey with this three-year program. Along with a successful year of pharmacy school, this pre-professional pathway will lead to a bachelor’s degree (B.S.) with a concentration in Health Sciences in the Department of Chemistry. (A Doctor of Pharmacy degree requires an additional four years of pharmacy school.)
The Allied Health Sciences concentration is designed for students who plan to attend professional schools in cytotechnology, chiropractic medicine, pharmacy, or medical laboratory sciences. It can be used by students interested in studying dentistry, medicine, occupational therapy or physical therapy. However, students interested in these fields should discuss with their advisors other major options that may better suit their needs.
Uga Pre Pharmacy Students
In some programs, this concentration leads to at least 90 credit hours, admission to vocational school, successful completion of one year of study, or completion of a vocational program (3+1). There is a four-year option, and incentives are available for students enrolled in certain programs. For students studying the 3+1 program, at least 21 semesters of junior and senior (3000-4000 level) courses. Students choosing the four-year option must have completed a minimum of 36 credit hours junior and senior year (3000-4000 level) with a C average (2.00 GPA) or better. A student may complete 12 of the last 30 credit hours at another college or university or through CLEP with the approval of the college dean.
Admission to the pre-professional program does not guarantee admission to the professional program. Admission selection is competitive and is conducted in accordance with the admissions committee’s program selection standards.

All areas of biology are required. Develop the skill set necessary for success in biology. Topics include understanding departmental and university resources and expectations, developing individual study plans, and developing professional interaction skills.
Co-requisite: BIOL 1031. Prepared as a non-major. Offers understanding, experience and skills related to common biological problems. Includes class discussions, small group activities, lectures, selected readings, and laboratory studies. Students who earned an A in BIOL 1030/1031 and wish to major or minor in biology may substitute BIOL 1110/BIOL 1111 for BIOL 1030/BIOL 1031 to satisfy the major or minor requirements. Three hours of lecture and one or two hours of laboratory.
Prerequisite: MATH 1710 with a C- or MATH ACT score of 19 or higher. Prerequisite: BIOL 1111. Intended for biology majors and minors and students in other natural sciences. Nature of science, principles and processes of biology including cells (structure, function, metabolism, division), genetics, evolution, viruses, bacteria, protists and fungi. A three-hour lecture and one three-hour laboratory. BIOL 1110 may be used to fulfill half of the 8-hour general education requirement in science, but is the first semester of a two-semester sequence devoted primarily to science. Prerequisite: BIOL 1110/BIOL 1111. Corequisite: BIOL 1121. Intended for biology majors, minors, and other sciences. The study of plants and animals, emphasizing evolution, structure, function, reproduction, growth, and ecology. A three-hour lecture and one three-hour laboratory. TBR regular course: BIOL 1120
Prerequisite: BIOL 2001. Open to anyone majoring in medicine or related medical professions, but may not major in biology. Survey of Medical Laboratory Careers, Curricula and Related Laboratory Programs; experience in medical laboratory testing procedures. One hour lecture and one or two hours laboratory.
A grade of C or better in BIOL 1030, BIOL 1031 or high school chemistry or biology within the last five years is recommended. Prerequisite: BIOL 2011. Eligible for many pre-health professional programs, including nursing. Structure and functions of cells, mucous membranes, skeleton, muscles and nervous system.
